Further food contamination on the horizon?
Food inspectors fear that newly proposed legislation from the European commission to vastly simplify animal carcass inspections could increase the risk of contamination in the food supply chain. The changes would involve a reduction of the 70 pieces of in depth regulations, to 5 all-encompassing guidelines. These changes could allow infected animals—unfit for human consumption— to slip past the proposed new inspection criteria.
Unison, the union which represents UK government meat inspectors and official vets, claims the new rules would shift responsibility to ensure meat was fit for the public, away from independent bodies to food corporations. In light of the horse meat scandal, they fear this is not a wise choice.

The cost of supply chain disruption
A recent study has revealed that big UK manufacturers last year suffered losses of £58m due to supply chain disruption.
The largest costs came as a result of suppliers being unable to deliver the products that met quality standards, costing the industry around £20.4m.  54% of those surveyed were affected.

Walmart unveils the WAVE truck
Created in collaboration with Peterbilt, Great Dane Trailers and Capstone Turbine, Walmart unveiled this week plans for the Walmart Advanced Vehicle Experience— the WAVE truck. The truck is in the conceptual design stage.
Some unusual features of the proposed truck include its sports car like low profile that should make it 20% more aerodynamic than conventional long-haul freight, and the central positioning of the driver seat. The WAVE truck will furthermore, run on run diesel, natural gas or biodiesel, as well as use a turbine-powered, battery-electric hybrid drivetrain.
