BlackBerry awarded for sustainable supply chain efforts
Once the most popular smartphone maker – BlackBerry Ltd – seems to be getting on its’ feet again. The company recently received a 2014 Green Award from Supply & Demand Chain Executive. The award recognizes companies which put substantial efforts toward maintaining a strong focus on sustainability when developing their supply chain and business strategies. BlackBerry was competing against 200 other nominated companies. It is a remarkable achievement for a company which has been struggling for almost a decade, and is now getting back in the game with its recently introduced model – BlackBerry Passport.

Obama gives the small manufacturers a chance
The US president Barack Obama recently announced plans to improve the operations of the US manufacturing supply chains. As the small manufacturers are experiencing an innovation gap, the new program is designed to make the development of new products and adoption of latest technologies more accessible. The Department of Commerce’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership is planning on building new capabilities at its state-based research centers, which will be available for small manufacturers to utilize. Moreover, the National Institute of Standards and Technology Manufacturing Extension Partnership will set up new tools to make the access to advanced technologies, capital needed for growth and new markets less difficult. This initiative should reduce the technological gap between small and big firms in the manufacturing sector. After all, the large firms are not always the ones who come up with the greatest ideas.

USPS is preparing for holiday season
This holiday season the US Postal Service (USPS) will be delivering packages 7 days a week, from November 17th to December 25th, in order to ensure all packages arrive in time for Christmas. USPS is expecting their package business to grow by 12% this holiday season. It is predicted that between 450 and 470 million packages will be delivered during the busiest season of the year. USPS experienced a rise in demand for package services due to increased popularity of online shopping, however the agency still lost $2 billion this spring.
